Every year, billions of dollars are spent by the automotive industry on container transport and supply chain logistics alone. However, one industry leader is working to cut back costs associated with tracking critical assets by expanding its deployment of Radiant’s IoT asset tracking solution.
This will provide the Fortune 10 company with the opportunity to save nearly $15 million annually in reduced container loss and diminished expedites. Additional savings are expected, as the real-time location insight into container movement and usage data provided by the BLE asset tracking technology will help to eliminate plant interruptions and uncover other opportunities for streamlining transport.
Why Adopt IoT Asset Tracking Software?
Currently, returnable container tracking is a manual, reactive, labor-intensive process that is required to support production. By adopting the IoT asset tracking software, this progressive automotive company will be able to facilitate proactive and remote tracking of mobile assets in real time.
This proactive tracking will not only help to reduce container loss but BLE asset tracking will also empower the automotive leader to identify container fleets that are short or in excess of demand, allowing them to ensure fleet health and reduce premium freight. Further, the data collected by the IoT platform will support their planning and analysis practices as programs and market mix change.
Deploying BLE Asset Tracking
By leveraging hundreds of existing IoT devices, such as Cisco access points, tablets, and more, the project is largely infrastructure-free. The automotive leader will deploy just a few of Radiant’s proprietary BLE gateways across each site. This has helped to keep the cost of the project a mere fraction of what the company will end up saving in reduced container loss each year.
In addition to the minimal infrastructure required, Bluetooth Low Energy beacons are recognized as the industry standard tracking devices for IoT asset management solutions. This is due to the low cost and upkeep of BLE beacons in comparison to other technology, as well as its location accuracy and read range. An optimized battery life of over 6 years can also be expected of the BLE-connected devices when utilized with Radiant’s IoT solutions.
To date, the industry leader has tagged over 50,000 returnable containers, including specialized racks and pallet boxes, with Radiant’s C17 and T21 BLE asset tracking beacons. With one-hundred percent of the company’s fabricators now trained to do so, plans to tag an additional 1.55mm containers with BLE asset tracking beacons are already underway.
Scaling BLE Asset Tracking
As part of their strategic roll-out, the automotive leader is partnering with suppliers and vendors to deploy additional gateways and BLE asset tracking sensors. Not only will they be able to tag all existing containers, but new containers will also be tagged as part of the fabrication and assembly process. This will allow them to tackle high hurt supplier owned fleets but will also provide further insight for the vendors themselves via the IoT asset tracking software. The overall scope of the project is set to include 1.6 million packaging assets across 1,600 sites.
